Binaural Sound Study - Summer Rain on a Tin Roof

2017

H96 x W127 cm

Japanese ink and rain on Arches paper.

This experimental drawing was made on a day of steady rain, both outside and under a tin roof, during a 2016-17 artist residency at Murray’s Cottage in Hill End. This drawing device is an investigation into how listening can extend an abstract drawing practice. Held together between the knees like a musical instrument, each side allowed for the investigation of sounds perceived by each ear during the drawing process. Layers of ink drawing were quickly washed away by the downpour, as ephemeral as the sounds which inspired them. What remains are gestural residues, memories of moments of perception.
